Your creativity isn’t dead. It’s just asleep!
Ever woken up in the middle of the night to find your arm completely numb? You can’t move your hand or feel a thing. It’s a bit scary, right? What do you do? You rub it, shake it, wiggle your fingers, and wait for the feeling to come back. You don’t panic. You just keep moving until things flow again.
For me, writer’s block feels exactly the same.
When the channel goes quiet, when lyrics, words or melodies stop coming, I don’t freak out anymore. I keep working at it. I keep writing, no matter how clumsy or nonsensical it seems. Eventually, the flow returns.
There are times in life when something goes strangely silent. A friendship, career momentum, money, inspiration. We all hit those patches where things stall or go off track. In my line of work, I can’t afford to sit in that space too long, so I’ve found ways to move through it. To my surprise, those same strategies help with other blocks in life too.
So what do I do when I’m stuck? I write anyway.
It might be rubbish. It might be a string of curse words, a random thought, or a shopping list. It doesn’t matter. It’s not meant for anyone. It’s just there to keep things moving, to push through the silence until new ideas return.
And I apply that mindset to everything.
If business is slow, I show up anyway.
If I’ve got a spare afternoon, I use it to explore. I might try a new instrument, mess around with a plugin, or play with a genre I’ve never touched before. The goal isn’t brilliance. The goal is motion.
Because nothing is really wasted anyway.
Every step forward sharpens a skill or creates something new. You never know what small spark will light the next fire.
Writer’s block isn’t a wall. It’s just a pause. A reminder to stay curious, keep going, and wiggle your toes
