A new start, a new learning curve

Well it’s been a long time between posts. It’s been a busy year for me on all fronts.

Amongst other upheavals, I have relocated to a beautiful, full blown, pre-existing studio in Balaclava.

This studio was custom built by the guys who built Woodstock Studios, and it is an extremely well designed and thought out facility.

I feel particularly privileged to have this space. As most of my fellow music producers operate out of a spare room, a padded out basement or a back shed, it feels unusually extravagant and indulgent for me to have a full blown studio.

Being first and foremost a musician and not a sound engineer, there are holes in my knowledge and experience in this kind facility. I am savvy enough to be able to join a lot of the dots and work things out for myself, but this is all going to take some time. The studio is completely fitted out with some of the best gear in the world, and being a lover of technology, I would consider it a travesty to not utilize this gear as much and in the best way possible.

I’ve ‘piggy-backed’ my existing system onto this studio system so I can continue to do my work, and intend to slowly merge into it, as I become more and more familiar with it’s wiring, and functionality.

2011 – “Looney Tunes LIVE – Classroom Capers”

I have had the pleasure of providing my arranging services to Marilla Productions for the up and coming stage show “Looney Tunes LIVE – Classroom Capers”. The chance to produce some Carl Stalling(esque) music was a blast, and I’m thrilled with the results. If you can, check this show out.

The show is directed by Cameron Wenn (Walking with Dinosaurs), and musically directed by Dean Lotherington.

PAXUS PRODUCTIONS IS RELOCATING

I am excited to announce, that after seven years in South Yarra, Paxus is moving to 28-30 William St, Balaclava VIC 3183.

The move will commence at the start of October this year.

The new studio is fitted out with a Protools system, several isolation booths and a very comfortable control room.

So Paxus Productions will be able to accomodate larger groups and a wider range of live performers.

Quality Backing Tracks Made To Order

While I spend the majority of my time these days producing arrangements of original music for various purposes, I welcome the opportunity to create re-productions of existing songs for use as backing tracks. Many of the professional singers I work with are asked to perform a specific song for an occasion. These days it is also not uncommon for performers to be given specific paramaters too, like song duration and tempo. Performances at events, or live on TV need to be timed down to the second. It can often be these factors that eliminate the possibility of using an ‘off the shelf’ karaoke track to perform with.

Unless you’re a whizz with an audio editing program, and you are happy to restrict yourself to the existing material, then getting a song arrangement custom built for you is the best solution. It ensures the highest quality, the perfect fit, and a reliable duration every time you perform it. It also sets you apart from the rest.

You may be the most talented singer on the planet, but if you are performing with a shoddy midi file, or trying to sing to a second rate karoake track 2 keys too high for your range, then you are not going to impress anyone.

As a musician first and foremost, I consider my role in these productions as an accompanist. It’s my job to do everything possible to make you shine.
